  The Manitoba Standardbred Sires and Breeders Association (MSSBA) is a nonprofit organization which represents the interests of Manitoba standardbred sire and broodmare owners.

The breeding sector is the foundation of the Manitoba standardbred racing industry. MSSBA promotes the growth and quality of the breed in the province by encouraging the purchase of quality broodmares and stallions as well as the purchase and racing of Manitoba sired and bred standardbreds. Its key activities include:

  A:
maintaining a Manitoba standardbred sire registry for sires that stand in the province for their entire breeding season – foals of registered sires are eligible to MSSBA-sponsored sire stakes;

   B: managing an incentive program for owners and Manitoba breeders of Manitoba sired and bred 2, 3, and 4-year olds that have finished 1st-5th in Manitoba races;

   C: operating a stake program for Manitoba sired 2 and 3-year-olds; a futurity program for Manitoba sired, or Manitoba foaled 3-year-olds, dams of which are Manitoba owned; and a Canadian owned/sired 3-year-old filly stake co-sponsored with Standardbred Canada to improve the quality of broodmares within the province;

   D: promotional activities.

The Board has a capacity for 8 directors.
A Secretary-Treasurer is paid as a part-time employee.

   The standardbred industry has a strong economic impact in the province:

   It is an agricultural based industry that has linkages throughout the agricultural sector, supporting-service industries, and the remainder of Manitoba’s economy. It has a significant impact on rural areas where the breeding and racing activity is located. The breeding component generates sales and purchases in the agricultural sector for horses, feed and bedding as well as investment in land, buildings and equipment. The cost of production includes variable and fixed costs such as labour, insurance, trucking, depreciation, etc. Ultimately, many race horses fill the ranks of pleasure, jumpers, dressage, and equine ranching, thus continuing the need for labour, feed and supplies.

The industry provides direct employment and income for horse farm operators and horse care workers. It also provides business activity for supporting service workers such as veterinarians, farriers, feed and hay dealers, and transportation employees. Other local businesses supported by the breeding industry include vehicle dealerships, building suppliers, gas stations, and businesses selling groceries and clothing/lodging to workers supported by the breeding industry. The breeding industry supplies the horses required for racing and, thereby, supports an entertainment/tourism industry and the associated activities at rural race tracks in Manitoba.
